The National Sex Offender Registry
There are over 750,000 registered sex offenders in the United States, including nearly 400,000 involving crimes against children.
There is a tremendous amount of emphasis on those individuals who have been convicted of sexually victimizing kids. There are restrictions on where they can live, where they can work and where they can go. The general feeling of most people is to lock them all up or send them to some deserted island. While it is certainly understandable to have such disgust and contempt, some of it is generated from false assumptions and misplaced fear.
The facts are that many who have committed crimes that mandate placement as a registered sex offender will not repeat their offense. There are many more, who with some treatment, can be rehabilitated to pose little to no threat. Of course, there are also those who are at a sickness level most of us cannot imagine… ones who must be isolated from society forever.
The problem occurs when we paint all offenders with one broad stroke. So Child Rescue Network urges you to use the National Registry to locate sex offenders in your area, but understand that most of these individuals should not cause you to be too concerned.
This is the National Sex Offender Registry that provides access to lists from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, US Territories and Indian Country.
The truth is that only 1 out of 10 child molesters are Registered Sex Offenders. The other 90% haven’t been caught… yet.
