There is an amazing story unfolding regarding the abduction of Jaycee Lee Dugard.  Taken off the street at age 11, this little girl was victimized for years and years and years.  Now 29 with two daughters, who were allegedly fathered by her captor, Jaycee is finally reuniting with her family.  Miracles do indeed happen!  

As we learn more about the things that have happened over the last 18 years, we begin to understand the incredible courage and determination of Jaycee.   Just as with Shawn Hornbeck, who was held for 4 years before being rescued, Jaycee experience a horror that fortunately few will ever endure. 

From some people the questions pop up as to why didn't she get away whenever she had the chance as there were certainly opportunities.  However, we must try to understand the power such a predator has over their victims.  Imagine having every action and every moment of time being controlled by a monster all the while being sexually assaulted and brutalized repeatedly.   In many cases the captive is threaten with violent retaliation for any attempts to get away, including death or the death of loved ones.   In many longer term cases the abductee begins to relate to the abductor as the mind games and brainwashing influence the captive, not to mention the pure survival mode of finding ways to curry favor with the abductor to prevent future torture.

In the case of Jaycee Dugard, she shows an amazing strength.  Her two girls, now 11 and 15, can read and write, even though they rarely spent anytime outside of the backyard compound, their abductor had created.   In such an unbelievable environment, she was able to cope and even create some happy moments.  

All we can do now is pray for the family as their journey has been a difficult one and even though they are reunited with loving family and friends, the journey will continue to be a challenge.
